Norman’s Lampeye (Poropanchax normani)
Description:
Norman’s Lampeye is a small, peaceful killifish named for the bright, iridescent blue “lamps” that shine above its eyes. Their subtle silver bodies and glowing eye-markings make them especially striking in planted aquariums under subdued lighting. Best kept in schools, they add gentle movement and a touch of shimmer to nano and community setups.
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful, schooling
Maximum Size: ~3.5–4 cm
Diet: Micropredator/omnivore – thrives on quality micro-pellets, crushed flakes, frozen and live foods such as baby brine shrimp and daphnia.
Aquarium Requirements:
-
Minimum Tank Size: 40 litres
 -
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 22–26°C
 -
pH: 6.0–7.5
 -
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

 -
 -
Environment: Heavily planted tank with floating plants and dim lighting enhances their “lampeye” glow. Gentle filtration is preferred.

Compatibility:
Great for peaceful community aquariums with other small fish such as rasboras, small tetras, Corydoras, and dwarf shrimp. Avoid larger or aggressive tankmates.
Notes:
-
Keep in groups of at least 8–10 to encourage natural schooling behaviour and improve colour.
 -
Their eye glow is most visible under darker backgrounds and softer lighting.
