Basic Care Requirements for a Brown House Snake
Enclosure:
20-gallon tank minimum for juveniles, 30-40 gallons for adults
Secure, escape-proof lid
Substrate:
Aspen shavings, cypress mulch, or paper towels
Avoid pine and cedar (toxic fumes)
Temperature & Humidity:
Warm side: 85-90°F (29-32°C)
Cool side: 75°F (24°C)
Nighttime drop: ~70°F (21°C)
Humidity: 50-60% (increase slightly during shedding)
Heating:
Under-tank heat pad or heat lamp with thermostat
No heat rocks (risk of burns)
Lighting:
No special lighting required, but a natural day/night cycle is beneficial
UVB optional but may support overall health
Hides & Enrichment:
At least two hides (warm & cool side)
Climbing branches and artificial plants for enrichment
Feeding:
Frozen-thawed mice appropriate to snake’s size
Feed every 5-7 days (juveniles), 7-10 days (adults)
Avoid handling for 24-48 hours after feeding
Water & Hydration:
Fresh water in a shallow dish, changed daily
Large enough for occasional soaking
Handling & Temperament:
Generally docile but may be shy
Handle gently, support body, avoid sudden movements
Limit handling during shedding and after feeding
Shedding:
Provide a humid hide if shedding issues arise
Ensure shed is complete, including eye caps
Cleaning:
Spot clean waste daily
Full substrate change and deep clean monthly
Health Concerns:
Watch for signs of respiratory infection (wheezing, mouth gaping)
Look out for stuck shed, mites, or unusual behavior
