When ordering livestock please select the box size and add it to your cart for accurate overnight (1-2 days) shipping costs. A small box can take 1-2 bags and a medium box 6 bags. One bag fits max 10 small (1-3cm) fish or max 2 medium (3-5cm) fish or max 1 large (>5cm) fish.

Convict Cichlid (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum)

Description:

• Appearance:

  • Body: Medium-sized and robust with a relatively elongated and laterally compressed shape.
  • Color: Silver or white body with prominent, bold vertical black stripes. The stripes can vary in intensity and number, with some individuals having more pronounced markings.
  • Size: Typically grows to 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) in length. Occasionally, they can reach up to 8 inches (20 cm) in larger tanks.

• Behavior:

  • Activity: Active and energetic. Known for their aggressive and territorial nature, especially during breeding or when defending their space.
  • Social Structure: Territorial and can be very aggressive towards other fish, especially in smaller tanks or during breeding periods.

Care Requirements:

• Tank Size:

  • Minimum of 30 gallons (114 liters); larger tanks are recommended to provide adequate space and reduce territorial aggression.

• Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C).
  • pH: 6.5-7.5.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water. They are adaptable but prefer slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
  • Filtration: Strong filtration is essential due to their high waste output. Ensure the filter provides adequate water movement without creating excessive current.

• Tank Setup:

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel is ideal. They may dig or shift the substrate around.
  • Aquascaping: Include hiding spots and structures like rocks, driftwood, and caves. This provides territories and reduces aggression by giving them places to claim.
  • Lighting: Standard aquarium lighting is sufficient. Provide shaded areas and hiding spots to reduce stress.

• Diet:

  • Primary Food: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet including high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
  • Supplemental Food: Offer occasional treats like blanched vegetables (e.g., zucchini, spinach) for a balanced diet.

• Behavioral Considerations:

  • Compatibility: Territorial and aggressive. Best kept with other robust, non-aggressive fish or in a species-specific tank. Avoid keeping with smaller or less aggressive species.
  • Social Behavior: Can be kept in pairs or small groups, but provide ample space and hiding spots. Males can be particularly aggressive towards each other and other males.

• Tank Maintenance:

  • Water Changes: Regular water changes (20-30% weekly) are necessary to maintain water quality and prevent toxin buildup.
  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the tank, remove uneaten food, and manage waste. Ensure the filtration system is working effectively.

• Health Care:

  • Observation: Watch for signs of stress or illness, such as changes in behavior, loss of appetite, or visible symptoms like discoloration or fin damage.
  • Treatment: Maintain optimal water conditions and consult an aquarium professional if health issues arise. Address any signs of disease or stress promptly.
