Kenya Tree (Capnella spp.) – Description & Care
The Kenya Tree, scientifically known as Capnella or sometimes referred to as the Capnella tree coral, is a hardy and fast-growing soft coral commonly found in reef tanks. Its name comes from its tree-like appearance, with a central stalk and branching polyps that give it a "tree" shape. The Kenya Tree can range in color, with most being light tan, brown, or green, although some varieties can take on slightly more vibrant hues under the right lighting. Known for its resilience, the Kenya Tree is a popular choice for beginner aquarists due to its low-maintenance care and rapid growth.
Care Requirements:
1. Lighting
- Moderate Lighting (PAR 100-250)
- The Kenya Tree prefers moderate lighting, but it can tolerate both lower and stronger light if gradually acclimated.
-
LED, T5, or metal halide lighting will work well.
-
Too much light can cause the Kenya Tree to become stressed, while too little light may result in poor growth or color.
2. Flow
- Moderate to Low Flow
- Kenya Trees prefer gentle to moderate flow, where the polyps can sway lightly but aren’t blasted by direct currents.
-
Too strong flow can cause the coral to retract, while too little flow can lead to detritus buildup and hinder the coral’s polyp extension.
3. Placement
-
Mid to lower regions of the tank.
- It thrives in areas with indirect flow and moderate lighting.
- Give it space to grow, as it can spread relatively quickly and sometimes even dominate nearby areas.
4. Water Parameters
-
Temperature: 74-80°F (23-27°C)
-
Salinity: 1.023-1.025 SG (35 ppt)
-
pH: 8.1-8.4
-
Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
-
Calcium: 400-450 ppm
-
Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
-
Nitrates: 5-10 ppm
-
Phosphates: 0.01-0.05 ppm
5. Feeding
-
Photosynthetic, but can benefit from occasional supplemental feeding.
-
Target feeding with small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or zooplankton will promote faster growth and vibrant coloration.
- Kenya Trees can also absorb nutrients from the water, so additional feeding isn’t always necessary.
6. Tank Mates & Compatibility
-
Peaceful and non-aggressive, Kenya Trees are well-suited for community reef tanks.
- They can be placed with other soft corals, such as zoanthids, mushrooms, and leathers, but avoid placing them too close to SPS corals as they can be stung.
-
Reef-safe fish like clownfish, wrasses, and tangs work well with Kenya Trees.
-
Monitor for any signs of the coral becoming overgrown or aggressive toward nearby corals, especially in a crowded tank.
7. Special Considerations
-
Fast-growing: Kenya Trees can grow and spread rapidly, sometimes becoming invasive in a tank if not kept in check.
-
Can reproduce via budding, forming new branches and spreading colonies. You may need to frag the coral if it starts to overtake too much space in your tank.
-
Dip before introducing to the tank to avoid pests like Aiptasia, flatworms, or parasites.
-
Toxicity: When fragging, be cautious, as some species of Capnella can release toxins that may harm other corals if stressed. Always perform fragging in well-ventilated areas.
Kenya Trees are known for their fast growth, easy care, and attractive appearance, making them ideal for beginner aquarists looking for a colorful and low-maintenance addition to their reef tank. While they can grow aggressively if given too much space, proper placement and care will ensure they thrive without overtaking the tank.
