When ordering livestock please select the box size and add it to your cart for accurate overnight (1-2 days) shipping costs. A small box can take 1-2 bags and a medium box 6 bags. One bag fits max 10 small (1-3cm) fish or max 2 medium (3-5cm) fish or max 1 large (>5cm) fish.

Neon Dwarf Rainbow (Melanotaenia praecox)

Description:

• Appearance:

  • Size: Typically grows to about 2.5-3 inches (6-8 cm) in length.
  • Color: Males are strikingly colorful with vibrant blue and red hues, and a neon greenish sheen. Females are less brightly colored, often displaying more subdued, pale shades.
  • Body Shape: Small, slender, and streamlined with a forked tail.

• Behavior:

  • Activity Level: Active and lively swimmers.
  • Social Behavior: Peaceful and prefers to be in schools. Males display their brightest colors when in a group or during breeding displays.

Care Requirements:

• Tank Size:

  • Minimum: 20 gallons (76 liters) to provide ample swimming space for a small school.
  • Larger Tank: Recommended for better stability and more swimming space.

• Tank Setup:

  • Substrate: Fine gravel or sand is preferred.
  • Decorations: Provide a well-planted tank with some open swimming areas. Include driftwood and rocks for hiding spots.
  • Lighting: Moderate to bright lighting helps enhance their coloration and promotes plant growth.

• Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C).
  • pH: 6.5-7.5. Slightly acidic to neutral.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.
  • Filtration: Efficient filtration with moderate water flow; ensure good oxygenation.

• Diet:

  • Primary Food: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
  • Supplemental Food: Include occasional vegetable matter or algae-based foods.

• Behavioral Considerations:

  • Compatibility: Peaceful and ideal for community tanks. Avoid aggressive or larger fish.
  • Tank Mates: Suitable companions include other small peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, and peaceful bottom dwellers.

  • Water Changes: Regular water changes of 20-30% weekly to maintain water quality.
  • Cleaning: Keep the tank clean and ensure the filtration system is working properly.
