Purple Torch Coral (Euphyllia glabrescens) – Description & Care
The Purple Torch Coral is a stunning variety of Euphyllia glabrescens, prized for its long, flowing tentacles in shades of deep purple, sometimes with contrasting green, gold, or blue tips. It adds motion and vibrant color to reef tanks and is a favorite among LPS coral enthusiasts.
Care Requirements:
1. Lighting
- Moderate to High (PAR 100-250)
- Best under LED or T5 lighting, with an acclimation period to prevent stress.
2. Flow
- Moderate to Strong
- Prefers an alternating or indirect flow to keep tentacles swaying without being blasted.
3. Placement
- Mid to lower sections of the tank, depending on light intensity.
- Allow at least 6 inches of space from other corals to prevent stinging with its long sweeper tentacles.
4. Water Parameters
-
Temperature: 76-80°F (24-27°C)
-
Salinity: 1.025 SG (35 ppt)
-
pH: 8.1-8.4
-
Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
-
Calcium: 400-450 ppm
-
Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
-
Nitrates: 5-10 ppm
-
Phosphates: 0.01-0.05 ppm
5. Feeding
- Photosynthetic but benefits from direct feeding.
- Target feed 1-2 times per week with meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral foods like Reef Roids for optimal growth.
6. Tank Mates & Compatibility
-
Avoid aggressive corals (e.g., Galaxea, Hydnophora) to prevent chemical warfare.
-
Clownfish may host, but excessive rubbing can stress or damage the coral.
-
Reef-safe fish and inverts are fine, but avoid coral-picking fish like large angelfish or butterflyfish.
7. Special Considerations
-
Sweepers extend at night, so provide ample space.
-
Acclimate slowly to avoid light or flow shock.
-
Fragile during shipping—handle with care to prevent skeleton damage.
-
Dip new additions to prevent pests or brown jelly disease.
