Zebra Danio (Danio rerio)
Description:
-
Appearance:
- Body: Small and slender with an elongated, streamlined shape.
- Color: Typically silver or pale blue with distinct horizontal black or dark blue stripes running from head to tail. The stripes resemble a zebra’s pattern.
- Size: Grows to about 1.5-2.5 inches (4-6 cm) in length.
-
Behavior:
- Activity: Very active and energetic. Known for their playful and constant swimming.
- Social Structure: Peaceful and social fish that thrive in groups. They are generally non-aggressive and are suitable for community tanks.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size:
- Minimum of 10 gallons (38 liters) for a small group. Larger tanks are preferable for more swimming space and better environmental stability.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 64-74°F (18-23°C). They can tolerate a range of temperatures but prefer cooler water.
- pH: 6.5-7.5.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water. They are adaptable to various water hardness levels.
- Filtration: Standard filtration is sufficient. Ensure the filter provides gentle water flow, as Zebra Danios prefer moderate current.
-
Tank Setup:
- Substrate: Gravel or sand is suitable. They are not particular about substrate type.
- Aquascaping: Provide a well-planted tank with plenty of open swimming space. Adding some rocks, driftwood, and hiding spots can enhance the environment and mimic their natural habitat.
- Lighting: Standard aquarium lighting is sufficient. They do well with moderate light that enhances their stripes.
-
Diet:
- Primary Food: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet including high-quality flake food, pellets, and live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.
- Supplemental Food: Offer occasional treats like blanched vegetables (e.g., peas, spinach) for dietary variety and health.
-
Behavioral Considerations:
- Compatibility: Ideal with other peaceful community fish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species. Suitable tank mates include small, non-aggressive fish and other peaceful schooling species.
- Social Behavior: Zebra Danios are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6-8 individuals to ensure they feel secure and exhibit natural behaviors.
-
Tank Maintenance:
- Water Changes: Perform regular water changes (20-30% weekly) to maintain water quality and reduce toxin buildup.
- Cleaning: Regularly clean the tank and remove any uneaten food or waste. Ensure the filtration system is functioning properly.
-
Health Care:
- Observation: Watch for signs of stress or illness, such as changes in behavior, loss of appetite, or visible symptoms like discoloration or unusual spots.
- Treatment: Maintain optimal water conditions and seek advice from an aquarium professional if any health issues arise. Address any signs of disease or stress promptly.
