When ordering livestock please select the box size and add it to your cart for accurate overnight (1-2 days) shipping costs. A small box can take 1-2 bags and a medium box 6 bags. One bag fits max 10 small (1-3cm) fish or max 2 medium (3-5cm) fish or max 1 large (>5cm) fish.

Freshwater Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

Description:

• Appearance:

  • Body: Triangular and laterally compressed with an elegant, streamlined shape.
  • Color: Various color morphs available, including silver with black stripes, marble, zebra, and other hues. Often has a shimmering, iridescent quality.
  • Fins: Long, flowing dorsal and anal fins that extend elegantly, enhancing their graceful appearance.
  • Size: Typically reaches 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) in body length, with fins extending further, making them appear larger.

• Behavior:

  • Generally peaceful but can be territorial, particularly during breeding.
  • Prefers to swim in the middle to upper levels of the tank.

Care Requirements:

• Tank Size:

  • Minimum of 20 gallons (76 liters) for a small group; larger tanks are preferable for multiple fish or to provide ample swimming space.

• Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C).
  • pH: 6.0-7.5.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.
  • Filtration: Good filtration is essential to maintain high water quality and provide stable conditions.

• Tank Setup:

  • Aquascaping: Provide plenty of swimming space with vertical elements such as tall plants or driftwood. These fish enjoy some cover but also need open areas to swim.
  • Substrate: Soft substrate like sand or fine gravel is ideal. Include some plant cover and hiding spots.

• Diet:

  • Omnivorous; feed a balanced diet including high-quality flake foods, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small crustaceans.
  • Supplement with vegetable matter like spirulina or blanched vegetables to maintain a balanced diet.

• Behavioral Considerations:

  • Can be territorial and may exhibit aggressive behavior towards other angelfish or fish with similar body shapes; ensure adequate space and hiding spots.
  • Best kept with other peaceful fish that are not overly aggressive or too small.

• Tank Maintenance:

  • Regular water changes (20-30% weekly) are crucial to keep the water clean and healthy.
  • Monitor and adjust water parameters regularly to maintain stable conditions.

• Health Care:

  • Watch for signs of stress or illness, such as changes in behavior, loss of appetite, or visible symptoms like spots or lesions.
  • Quarantine new fish to prevent the introduction of diseases to the established tank.
