Molly – Care & Description
Description:
Mollies are hardy, active livebearers known for their sleek bodies, fan-shaped tails and constant grazing behaviour. They come in many popular varieties such as Black Molly, Sailfin Molly, Dalmatian, Gold Dust, Balloon and Lyretail. Their peaceful nature, easy breeding and striking colours make them a favourite for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
Care Requirements
• Tank Size:
100 litres+ recommended, especially for larger Sailfin varieties which need more swimming space.
• Temperament:
Generally peaceful but males can be pushy. Keep in groups with more females than males (2–3 females per male).
• Compatibility:
Great for peaceful communities: platies, guppies, swordtails, tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, corydoras and most snails.
• Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 24–28°C
-
pH: 7.2–8.4
-
Hardness: Prefers hard, mineral-rich water
-
Salinity: Handle very light brackish conditions, but not required for healthy aquarium strains.
• Diet:
Omnivorous with a strong herbivorous lean. Offer high-quality flakes/pellets, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, algae wafers, and frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms.
• Breeding:
Livebearers that breed readily. Gestation is 4–6 weeks, producing 20–100 fry. Provide plants or breeding traps for fry survival.
General Notes:
-
Great algae grazers.
-
Hardy but thrive best in clean, well-oxygenated water.
-
Balloon mollies are more sensitive due to body shape—avoid poor water quality.
