🐟 Betta (Betta splendens) – Care & Description

Description

• Also known as Siamese Fighting Fish

• Intelligent, interactive, and full of personality

• Males are brightly coloured with long flowing fins (females have shorter fins)

• Labyrinth fish – can breathe air from the surface

• Best kept alone or with very carefully chosen tank mates

Tank Requirements

• Minimum tank size: 20 litres (5 gallons) recommended

• Temperature: 25–28°C

• Heater required (tropical species)

• Filter: Gentle flow (bettas dislike strong currents)

• Lid required – bettas can jump

• Provide plants and hiding spots (live or silk plants preferred)

Water Parameters

• pH: 6.0–7.5

• Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm

• Nitrate: <20 ppm

• Regular partial water changes (20–30% weekly)

Diet

• High-quality betta pellets as a staple

• Supplement with frozen or live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia)

• Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily

• Avoid overfeeding – bettas are prone to bloating

Behaviour & Compatibility

• Territorial and aggressive towards other bettas

• Can be kept with peaceful, non-nipping tank mates in larger tanks

• Do not keep with fin-nipping fish

• Enjoy interaction and will often recognise their owner
