Geophagus Red Head Tapajos (Geophagus sp. "Red Head Tapajos")

Description:

  • Appearance:

    • Body: Oval-shaped and robust with a slightly flattened belly. Geophagus Red Head Tapajos have a distinctive and striking appearance due to their vibrant coloration.
    • Color: Notable for their bright red or orange head, which contrasts with a more subdued, often silver or brownish body. The body usually features horizontal stripes or bars.
    • Size: Grows up to 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) in length.
  • Behavior:

    • Activity: Semi-active and enjoys digging and sifting through the substrate in search of food. They are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding.
    • Social Structure: Can be kept in groups or pairs, but it's important to provide enough space to reduce territorial conflicts. They do well with other peaceful cichlids and community fish.

Care Requirements:

  • Tank Size:

    • Minimum of 55 gallons (208 liters). Larger tanks are preferred to provide ample swimming space and to accommodate their natural behavior of digging and exploring.
  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C). They prefer a warm environment.
    • pH: 6.5-7.5. They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water conditions.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water. They can tolerate a range of hardness but do best in moderate hardness.
    • Filtration: Good filtration is essential due to their waste production. Ensure the tank has efficient filtration with moderate water flow.
  • Tank Setup:

    • Substrate: Soft, sandy substrate is ideal. They enjoy digging and sifting through the sand, so avoid sharp or coarse substrates that could injure them.
    • Aquascaping: Provide plenty of hiding spots and territories using rocks, driftwood, and plants. Create open spaces for swimming and digging areas.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable. They do not have specific lighting needs but should have a regular light/dark cycle.
  • Diet:

    • Primary Food: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet including high-quality pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and earthworms.
    • Supplemental Food: Offer occasional treats like chopped vegetables or algae wafers to provide dietary variety.
  • Behavioral Considerations:

    • Compatibility: Best kept with other peaceful cichlids and community fish. Avoid aggressive species that might harass them. They may become territorial, especially during breeding or if space is limited.
    • Social Behavior: They can be kept in groups, but ensure there is enough space and hiding spots to minimize aggression and territorial disputes.
  • Tank Maintenance:

    • Water Changes: Regular water changes (20-30% weekly) are necessary to maintain water quality and manage the bioload.
    • Cleaning: Clean the tank regularly and remove any uneaten food or waste. Monitor the filtration system to ensure it is functioning effectively.
  • Health Care:

    • Observation: Monitor for signs of stress or illness, such as changes in behavior, loss of appetite, or visible symptoms like fin deterioration or discoloration.
    • Treatment: Maintain optimal water conditions and consult an aquarium professional if health issues arise. Address any signs of disease or stress promptly to ensure the well-being of your Geophagus Red Head Tapajos.
