eteractis malu (Delicate Sea Anemone / Malu Anemone)
Description:
Heteractis malu is a sand-dwelling anemone known for its soft, delicate appearance and attractive coloration. Its tentacles are generally short and stubby, sometimes with slightly swollen tips. They may appear in cream, tan, light brown, green, or with pink to purple hues around the mouth. When settled properly, the oral disc can expand wide and form a striking centerpiece in the aquarium.
Care Requirements:
-
Lighting: Moderate to strong lighting (T5, LED, or metal halide). While not as light-demanding as some carpet anemones, it does require stable, bright conditions.
-
Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow. Avoid strong, direct current that can cause it to close or detach.
-
Placement: Prefers to bury its foot in fine sand with its column partly hidden and oral disc exposed. It will often attach its foot to the glass bottom or a hard surface beneath the sand for security.
-
Diet: Photosynthetic through its symbiotic zooxanthellae, but should be supplemented with occasional feedings of finely chopped meaty foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, or small pieces of fish). Feed 1–2 times per week.
-
Size: Can grow up to 30–40 cm across when fully mature, though many remain smaller in captivity.
-
Temperament: Generally peaceful, but can sting and harm corals or other anemones if they come into contact.
-
Tank Mates: Suitable for hosting clownfish, particularly Amphiprion clarkii and Amphiprion ocellaris, though acceptance may vary. Avoid housing with multiple anemones unless the tank is large and stable.
Special Notes:
-
Needs a mature, stable aquarium (at least 6 months old) with pristine water quality.
-
Sensitive to parameter swings, particularly salinity and nitrate.
-
When stressed, it may wander in search of better conditions, so secure intakes and powerheads to prevent injury.
