Acanthastrea lordhowensis (Acan Coral / Micromussa lordhowensis)
Common Names: Acan Coral, Acan Lord, Lordhowensis Coral
Scientific Name: Acanthastrea (Micromussa) lordhowensis
🪸 Description
The Acanthastrea lordhowensis, often called Acan Lord, is one of the most colorful and eye-catching LPS corals in the hobby. Known for its fleshy polyps, bold patterns, and vibrant hues ranging from deep reds and oranges to electric blues and greens, this coral adds instant visual appeal to any reef display.
Each polyp resembles a miniature jewel, and colonies grow in a clustered formation that encrusts rockwork beautifully over time. Due to its hardiness and adaptability, it’s a favorite among both beginner and experienced reef keepers.
⚙️ Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Acan Lords are among the more forgiving LPS corals, thriving under stable water conditions and moderate lighting.
💡 Lighting
-
Low to Moderate (PAR 50–100)
-
Strong light can cause color fading or tissue recession.
-
Acclimate slowly when introducing to new lighting setups.
🌊 Water Flow
-
Low to Moderate
-
Gentle, indirect flow helps keep debris off the coral without irritating the fleshy polyps.
🧪 Water Parameters

| Salinity | 1.025–1.026 |
| pH | 8.1–8.4 |
| Alkalinity | 8–9.5 dKH |
| Calcium | 420–450 ppm |
| Magnesium | 1300–1400 ppm |

🍤 Feeding
-
Photosynthetic, but benefits from supplemental feeding.
-
Feed 2–3 times per week with Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral pellets.
-
Polyps extend more readily at night or when food is detected in the water.
🪸 Placement
-
Ideal for lower to mid regions of the tank.
-
Avoid placing too close to aggressive corals — while generally peaceful, Acan Lords can extend short sweeper tentacles.
-
Leave space for colony growth and expansion.
⚠️ Notes
-
Tolerant of a range of conditions but prefers stable water quality.
-
Benefits from trace elements like iodine and iron.
-
Propagates easily by fragging individual polyps.
