Product Description
Product Description
Pangasius refers mainly to a group of large river catfish from Southeast Asia (family Pangasiidae).
The two species most commonly encountered are:
✔️ Iridescent Shark (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)
— The species most sold in pet stores
— Silvery, torpedo-shaped, schooling behavior
— Can reach 3–4 feet (90–120 cm) in adulthood
✔️ Pangasius Catfish / Panga
A general term used for edible pangasius species, including koi and basa types.
These fish are not sharks, but get their name from their body shape and swimming style.
🐡 Aquarium Care (Important!)
⚠️ Pangasius are NOT suitable for most home aquariums.
They grow very large, swim fast, and need huge open space.
Tank Requirements
-
Minimum tank: 300–500+ gallons (for one adult)
-
Temperature: 72–80°F (22–27°C)
-
pH: 6.5–7.5
-
Water flow: Moderate to strong
-
Lighting: Low to moderate
They can injure themselves easily — they are nervous, skittish fish that dart when startled.
🍽️ Diet
Pangasius are omnivores:
-
Pellets (large catfish pellets)
-
Fish, prawns, insects
-
Bloodworms
-
Vegetables (spinach, peas)
-
Commercial pangasius/catfish food
They grow very fast, especially when young.
🤝 Tankmates
Need large, peaceful tankmates that won’t fit in their mouth.
Good examples (in very large tanks only):
-
Large barbs
-
Large silver dollars
-
Big plecos
-
Other pangasius
Avoid:
-
Small fish (will be eaten)
-
Aggressive fish (can stress pangasius)
🧠 Behavior
-
Schooling when young
-
Nervous and easily spooked
-
Powerful swimmers
-
Can jump — strong lid required
-
Sensitive to poor water quality
📝 Summary
Pangasius are beautiful, impressive catfish but not beginner-friendly and not suited to normal aquariums. They belong in huge tanks or public aquariums.
