Silver Flying Fox (Crossocheilus reticulatus)

Description:
The Silver Flying Fox is a hardy algae-eating fish that makes a great addition to freshwater aquariums. With its streamlined silver body, bold black lateral stripe, and sucker-like mouth, it actively grazes on algae across glass, rocks, and plants. This makes it a practical as well as attractive choice for community tanks.

Care Level: Easy to Moderate

Temperament: Generally peaceful but can become territorial with age, especially toward similar-shaped fish.

Maximum Size: ~15 cm

Diet: Omnivore – primarily algae grazer but should also be fed sinking algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), and occasional protein foods.

Aquarium Requirements:

• Minimum Tank Size: 100 litres

• Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22–28°C

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

• Environment: A well-oxygenated tank with good water flow, plenty of swimming space, driftwood, and smooth rocks for algae growth.

Compatibility:

• Good community fish when young.

• Suitable tankmates include barbs, danios, rasboras, rainbowfish, and peaceful catfish.

• Avoid housing with very similar species (like Siamese Algae Eaters or other Flying Foxes) as they may become aggressive toward one another.

Notes:

• Excellent algae controller, though adults may rely more on prepared foods as they age.

• Provide a tight-fitting lid as they are capable jumpers.
