Product Description
Acan Coral (Acanthastrea spp.)
Description:
Acan corals—also known as Acan Lords or Micromussa lords—are vibrant, fleshy LPS (large polyp stony) corals prized for their bold colours, plump polyps, and easy care. They form tight colonies with circular, fleshy heads that can display stunning combinations of red, green, blue, orange, and purple. Their compact shape makes them a favourite for nano reefs and mixed coral tanks.
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (extend sweeper tentacles at night)
Growth Form: Encrusting / dome-forming colonies
Lighting:
-
Low to moderate PAR (50–120).
-
Too much light can cause colour fading or polyp retraction.
-
Best placed in shaded or lower areas of the reef where they can expand fully.
Water Flow:
-
Low to moderate flow preferred.
-
Strong flow can cause the fleshy polyps to retract or tear.
-
Gentle, indirect current helps prevent detritus buildup.
Feeding:
-
While photosynthetic, Acan corals benefit greatly from target feeding.
-
Offer small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, reef roids, or finely chopped krill 2–3 times per week.
-
Feeding enhances colour and promotes faster growth.
Placement:
-
Place on sandbed or lower rockwork away from aggressive neighbours.
-
Maintain 3–5 cm spacing between colonies to avoid stinging.
Parameters:
| Parameter | Ideal Range |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 24–26 °C |
| Salinity | 1.024–1.026 |
| pH | 8.1–8.4 |
| Alkalinity | 8–10 dKH |
| Calcium | 400–450 ppm |
| Magnesium | 1250–1350 ppm |
Notes:
Acan corals are hardy and adapt well to most reef conditions. With stable water parameters, regular feeding, and gentle light, they develop intense colouration and form dense, eye-catching clusters—making them a perfect centrepiece coral for beginner to intermediate reef keepers.
