🐟 Bulgarian Seal Point Angelfish
Scientific Name: Pterophyllum scalare (variety)
Origin: Captive-bred variant, originally developed in Eastern Europe (notably Bulgaria)
Size: Up to 6 inches (15 cm) body length; up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall with fins
Lifespan: 8–10 years
Temperament: Semi-aggressive, territorial during breeding
Tank Level: Mid to top dweller
🌟 Description:
The Bulgarian Seal Point Angelfish is a striking angelfish variety with a pale, almost silvery-white body and sharply contrasting dark black points on its fins (especially dorsal and ventral). It typically has red or bright eyes and minimal to no vertical bar markings. This angelfish is a result of selective breeding and is prized for its unique look and rarity in the hobby.
🏠 Tank Requirements:
-
Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons (114 liters) for a pair; larger for groups
-
Water Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
-
pH: 6.5–7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (3–12 dGH)
-
Filtration: Moderate to strong (gentle flow preferred to avoid stressing fins)
-
Aquascape: Vertical space, driftwood, tall plants (like Amazon swords), and open swimming areas
-
Lighting: Moderate
🍽️ Diet:
Omnivorous; they enjoy a well-rounded diet:
-
High-quality flakes or pellets (formulated for cichlids)
-
Frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia
-
Occasional veggie matter (blanched spinach, spirulina-based flakes)
Feed 1–2 times daily; do not overfeed.
🧬 Breeding:
-
Form monogamous pairs and lay eggs on vertical surfaces
-
Parental care is common (they guard eggs and fry)
-
A separate breeding tank is ideal for best success
-
Soft, slightly acidic water helps trigger spawning
🤝 Tank Mates:
Choose peaceful to semi-aggressive tank mates that can handle the angelfish’s size and temperament:
-
Peaceful cichlids (like keyholes, rams)
-
Corydoras catfish
-
Larger tetras (rummy nose, black skirt, bleeding heart)
-
Plecos (small varieties)
Avoid: -
Fin-nippers (like tiger barbs)
-
Small fish (like neon tetras) that may be eaten
-
Other aggressive cichlids
📝 Notes:
-
Maintain stable water parameters—angelfish don’t like sudden changes
-
Perform regular water changes (25–40% weekly)
-
Can live solo, in pairs, or small groups—but monitor for aggression
-
Bulgarian Seal Points are rarer, so ensure they're sourced from a reputable breeder
