Betta Fish – Description & Care

• Scientific name: Betta splendens
• Adult size: 5–7 cm
• Lifespan: 3–5 years
• Temperature: 24–28°C
• pH: 6.5–7.5
• Minimum tank size: 15–20 L recommended
• Bettas are colourful, intelligent fish known for their flowing fins and strong personalities.
• Males are territorial and should never be kept together.
• Use a heater and gentle filter with low water flow.
• Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm and perform regular partial water changes.
• Provide plants, hiding places and resting areas near the surface.
• Keep the tank covered as Bettas can jump.
• Feed quality Betta pellets with occasional bloodworms, brine shrimp or daphnia.
• Feed small amounts 1–2 times per day.
• Suitable tankmates may include peaceful Corydoras, small rasboras, Otocinclus and snails.
• Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping fish.
• Watch for clamped fins, faded colour, poor appetite or unusual behaviour.
