Bicolour Hammer
Coral photographs may differ slightly from the actual coral you receive. Many of our coral images are taken under blue-spectrum aquarium lighting and may be enhanced with a blue light filter to better showcase fluorescence and coloration. As a result, colours and appearance can vary depending on your aquarium lighting, water conditions, and viewing angle.
We strive to represent each coral as accurately as possible, but natural variations in colour, pattern, size, and growth form should be expected.
Description
The Bicolour Hammer Coral is a beautiful Euphyllia variety characterised by its striking combination of two contrasting colours. Common colour combinations include bright green tentacles with purple tips, teal centres with gold highlights, or vibrant green polyps contrasted against deep violet tones. This natural colour contrast gives the coral a unique appearance that stands out within any reef aquarium.
The flowing hammer-shaped tentacles create constant movement, making the coral appear alive even from across the room. This combination of colour and motion has made Bicolour Hammers one of the most popular LPS corals among both beginner and experienced reef keepers.
Bicolour Hammer Corals are excellent centrepiece corals and are frequently used in Euphyllia gardens due to their compatibility with many other Euphyllia species. As colonies mature, they develop into impressive displays that become increasingly attractive over time.
Care Guide
Difficulty
Moderate
Lighting
Moderate lighting is ideal, with PAR levels generally ranging from 80 to 180. Gradual acclimation to stronger lighting is recommended.
Water Flow
Moderate indirect flow is preferred. The coral should display a gentle swaying motion without excessive whipping of the tentacles.
Placement
Suitable for placement in the middle or lower portions of the aquarium. Allow sufficient room around the coral for expansion and future growth.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 24–26°C
- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
- Nitrate: 2–15 ppm
- Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm
Feeding
While photosynthesis provides the majority of the coral's nutritional requirements, occasional feedings of reef foods, amino acids, mysis shrimp, and planktonic foods can enhance growth and coloration.
Compatibility
Semi-aggressive. Sweeper tentacles may extend beyond the visible polyp length, so provide at least 10–15 cm of clearance from neighbouring corals.
Growth Rate
Moderate to fast under favourable conditions. Stable parameters, moderate nutrient availability, and occasional feeding will support healthy colony development.
Why Choose a Bicolour Hammer?
The combination of vibrant colours, attractive movement, and relatively straightforward care requirements makes the Bicolour Hammer Coral one of the most rewarding Euphyllia varieties available. It offers excellent visual impact while remaining suitable for most established reef aquariums.
