Blue Devil Damsel
Blue Devil Damsel
Chrysiptera cyanea
Add a bold splash of electric blue to your marine aquarium with the Blue Devil Damsel. This hardy, active little fish is known for its intense colour, confident personality, and excellent suitability for established reef and fish-only marine systems.
Blue Devil Damsels are a great choice for marine keepers wanting a tough, eye-catching fish, but they are best suited to tanks with suitable hiding spaces and tank mates that can handle a more territorial personality. They can reach around 8–8.5 cm and are naturally found in reef-associated areas of the Indo-West Pacific.
Care Level
Easy to moderate
Temperament
Semi-aggressive to aggressive
Best added with care, especially in peaceful community tanks.
Reef Safe
Yes — generally safe with corals and most invertebrates, but may become territorial around its chosen area.
Tank Size
Recommended from 100 litres+, with plenty of rockwork and hiding spaces. Larger tanks are better if keeping with other fish due to their territorial behaviour.
Diet
Omnivore. Feed a varied marine diet including:
- Marine flakes or pellets
- Frozen mysis shrimp
- Brine shrimp
- Finely chopped meaty foods
- Spirulina-based foods
Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm
Compatibility
Best kept with other semi-aggressive marine fish such as larger clownfish, dottybacks, wrasses, dwarf angels, and other confident species. Avoid housing with very timid fish, especially in smaller aquariums.
Notes
Blue Devil Damsels are hardy and colourful, but they can be very territorial once settled. Add them to the aquarium with planning, and provide enough caves and rockwork to reduce aggression.
Please note: Livestock appearance may vary slightly depending on size, sex, lighting, stress level, and individual colouration. Marine fish should only be added to a properly cycled saltwater aquarium.
