Description

• Small, hardy freshwater pleco species

• Recognisable by bristle-like tentacles on the head (males most prominent)

• Available in common, albino, longfin, and various colour morphs

• Excellent algae grazer for community aquariums

• Peaceful and mostly nocturnal

Adult Size

• 10–15 cm

• Much smaller than common plecos

Tank Requirements

• Minimum tank size: 80–100 litres

• Sand or fine gravel substrate recommended

• Provide driftwood (essential for digestion)

• Caves or hiding spots required

• Live plants are generally safe

• Temperature: 22–28°C

• pH: 6.5–7.8

• Hardness: Soft to medium

• Stable, clean water is essential

• Moderate to strong filtration

• Well-oxygenated water

• 25–40% weekly water changes

Behaviour & Compatibility

• Peaceful and community-safe

• May be territorial toward other plecos

• Compatible with:

  • Tetras

  • Barbs

  • Cichlids (non-aggressive species)

• Best kept one per tank unless large aquarium

Diet

• Primarily herbivorous

• Eats:

  • Soft algae

  • Biofilm

• Must be supplemented with:

  • Algae wafers

  • Spirulina pellets

  • Blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach)

• Occasional protein foods acceptable

Breeding

• Cave spawner

• Male guards eggs and fry

• Breeds readily in home aquariums
