Care
Bucephalandra 'Brownie' is a highly sought-after aquarium plant known for its compact growth, dark chocolate-green leaves, and stunning iridescent blue, purple, or metallic shimmer under quality lighting. Like all Bucephalandra species, it grows naturally attached to rocks and driftwood and should never have its rhizome buried, as this can lead to rot.
It thrives in stable aquarium conditions with low to moderate lighting, although stronger lighting and the addition of CO₂ will encourage faster growth and bring out its vibrant iridescent colours. Regular dosing of a comprehensive liquid fertilizer and gentle water movement help maintain healthy growth. Due to its slow growth, Bucephalandra 'Brownie' is relatively low maintenance and is less demanding than many stem plants.
Description
Bucephalandra 'Brownie' is a premium aquatic plant prized for its rich, textured foliage and remarkable colour variations. Depending on the lighting and water conditions, the leaves can display shades of deep green, bronze, chocolate brown, and flashes of blue or purple iridescence, making it a true centrepiece in any aquascape.
Its compact growth habit makes it ideal for nano aquariums, nature aquariums, and high-end aquascapes where it can be attached to rocks, driftwood, or decorative hardscape. As it matures, the plant slowly develops attractive clumps and may even produce small white flowers while fully submerged.
Whether used as a focal point or grouped throughout the aquarium, Bucephalandra 'Brownie' brings a unique and elegant appearance that only improves with age.
Ideal For:
- Nano aquariums
- Nature-style aquascapes
- Shrimp tanks
- Planted community aquariums
- Low-tech and high-tech planted tanks
Pro Tip: For the best metallic blue and purple sheen, provide stable water parameters, moderate to high-quality LED lighting, and supplemental CO₂, while avoiding sudden changes in water chemistry
