Hybrid Shovelnose Catfish (Pseudoplatystoma spp. x Leiarius spp.)

Description:
The Hybrid Shovelnose Catfish is a striking freshwater predator, typically a cross between the Tiger Shovelnose Catfish (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum) and the Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus) or the Sailfin Pimelodid (Leiarius marmoratus). This hybrid boasts a beautifully patterned body with a mix of stripes and spots, and a broad, flat "shovel"-like snout. They grow rapidly and develop into impressive showpieces, ideal for large predator tanks or indoor ponds.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size:
Minimum 800–1000L for juveniles. Adults require well over 2000L due to their massive adult size (can reach 90cm+).

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 24–28°C

    • pH: 6.5–7.8

    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2–15 dGH)

    • Requires excellent filtration and weekly water changes.

  • Temperament:
Generally peaceful but predatory. Will eat smaller tankmates. Best kept with similarly sized or larger non-aggressive fish.

  • Diet:
Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of:

    • Pellets designed for carnivorous fish

    • Fish fillets, prawns, mussels

    • Occasional live or frozen foods (e.g., silversides, earthworms)
Avoid overfeeding to prevent fatty liver disease.

  • Tank Setup:

    • Soft sand or smooth substrate

    • Large hiding areas using driftwood or PVC pipes

    • Open swimming space is essential

    • Secure lid (they may jump)

Important Notes:

  • This fish is not suitable for beginners due to its size and care needs.

  • Long-term housing must be planned carefully — they can outgrow tanks rapidly.

  • They can live 10–15 years with proper care.
