Product Description

The Redhead Cichlid, scientifically known as Vieja synspilum, is a large and striking Central American cichlid prized for its vibrant pink, red, and orange facial colouring. As they mature, they develop intense pearling across the body and a bold red head that makes them a true showpiece fish.

They are intelligent, interactive, and quickly learn to recognise their owner.

🌈 Colour Development – Juvenile vs Adult

Juveniles:

  • Silver to light grey body

  • Dark vertical bars

  • Minimal red/pink on the head

  • Overall fairly plain appearance

Adults:

  • Strong red, pink, or orange head and throat

  • Iridescent blue/green pearling across the body

  • Yellow to orange highlights in fins

  • Males develop brighter colours and often a nuchal hump

Colour intensity improves with:

  • Age and maturity

  • Dominance (dominant fish show stronger colour)

  • High-quality diet

  • Stable, warm water conditions

📸 Please note: Photos may show both juvenile and fully developed adult specimens. Juveniles will not yet display full adult coloration.

Adult Size

25–30 cm (males larger than females)

Temperament

Semi-aggressive to aggressive
Territorial, especially when breeding
Best kept with similarly sized robust tank mates

Not suitable for small community fish.

Minimum Tank Size

450 litres+ recommended
Larger tanks required for pairs

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–28°C

  • pH: 7.0–8.0

  • Moderate to hard water

  • Strong filtration essential

They are heavy waste producers and require excellent water quality.

Diet

Omnivore

Feed:

  • Quality large cichlid pellets

  • Frozen foods (krill, shrimp, mussel)

  • Vegetable matter (spirulina, peas, zucchini)

A varied diet enhances colour and growth.

Tank Setup

  • Sand or fine substrate

  • Rocks and driftwood for structure

  • Open swimming space

  • Secure décor (they enjoy digging)

Special Notes

Vieja synspilum are bold, interactive, and make exceptional centerpiece fish in large Central American setups. Their dramatic colour transformation into adulthood is one of the most rewarding aspects of keeping this species.
