Product Description
Product Description
Tropheus are one of the most visually dynamic African cichlids available. Native to Lake Tanganyika, these fish are famous for their dramatic colour changes as they mature and establish dominance within the group.
Many variants start off relatively muted or with juvenile patterning, only to develop intense reds, oranges, yellows, or bold contrasting bands as they grow. Their colours deepen and intensify with age, proper diet, and stable water conditions.
🎨 Colour & Dominance Changes
One of the most fascinating traits of Tropheus is how their colour shifts based on:
-
Age & maturity – Juveniles often look very different from adults.
-
Dominance hierarchy – Dominant males display the brightest, most intense colours.
-
Stress levels – Subdominant fish may appear darker or washed out.
-
Water quality & diet – Proper herbivore feeding enhances vibrancy.
In a well-balanced group, you’ll often notice daily colour fluctuations as fish compete subtly within the social structure.
Some examples include:
-
Red varieties becoming deep crimson when dominant
-
Yellow-banded forms glowing brighter during breeding periods
-
Subdominant fish darkening to reduce aggression from others
Adult Size
10–15 cm (depending on variant)
Temperament
Semi-aggressive to aggressive
Highly territorial
Must be kept in groups (minimum 8–12 individuals) to spread aggression and stabilise hierarchy
Keeping too few will result in excessive aggression and constant stress colouration.
Minimum Tank Size
300 litres+ (larger strongly recommended)
