Mastacembelids, known as spiny eels, belong to the Mastacembelidae family and the Order Synbranchiformes, which are part of the Actinopterygii. These fish are native to Africa, southern and eastern Asia, and primarily inhabit soft-bottomed environments in freshwater, occasionally venturing into brackish water. Some species burrow in the substrate during the day or certain periods, and have even been found buried in soil during dry spells.
