Product Description

Empire Gudgeons are hardy, strikingly colorful natives that add a splash of red and blue to community tanks. Males in breeding dress rival saltwater fish in beauty, making them a fantastic choice for aquarists wanting something unique and distinctly Australian.

  • Common name: Empire Gudgeon

  • Scientific name: Hypseleotris compressa

  • Family: Eleotridae

  • Origin: Northern & Eastern Australia, New Guinea

  • Habitat: Freshwater rivers, creeks, billabongs, estuaries (can tolerate brackish water)

  • Adult size: 8–12 cm (3–5")

  • Lifespan: 3–5 years

🌿 Appearance

  • Males are brilliantly colored during breeding, displaying vivid red, orange, and blue bands on the fins.

  • Females are more subdued, typically silver or olive with transparent fins.

  • Body is laterally compressed (hence the name compressa).

🏞 Tank Requirements

  • Tank size: Minimum 80–100L for a group

  • Water parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–28 °C

    • pH: 6.0–7.5

    • Hardness: 5–15 dGH

  • Aquascape: Loves a planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places (driftwood, rocks, and dense plants).

  • Prefers moderate flow and excellent water quality.

🍽 Diet

  • Naturally feeds on insects, larvae, small crustaceans, and algae.

  • In captivity: Accepts high-quality frozen/live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia), plus sinking pellets and flakes.

  • Appreciates variety for best color and condition.

👫 Behavior & Compatibility

  • Generally peaceful but males can become territorial in breeding season.

  • Best kept in groups of 5+ to spread out aggression.

  • Tank mates: small rainbows, tetras, rasboras, livebearers, corydoras, and shrimp-safe if well-fed (but may eat fry or very small shrimp).
