Coral photographs may differ slightly from the actual coral you receive. Many of our coral images are taken under blue-spectrum aquarium lighting and may be enhanced with a blue light filter to better showcase fluorescence and coloration. As a result, colours and appearance can vary depending on your aquarium lighting, water conditions, and viewing angle.

We strive to represent each coral as accurately as possible, but natural variations in colour, pattern, size, and growth form should be expected.

Description

Favia Corals are among the most colourful and rewarding Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals available for reef aquariums. Known for their intricate patterns, vibrant colours, and hardy nature, Favia corals develop into impressive dome-shaped colonies covered in individual fleshy polyps. Their striking colour combinations—including fluorescent greens, blues, reds, oranges, purples, and contrasting mouths—make every colony unique and a true standout in any reef display.

Under blue-spectrum reef lighting, Favia corals display exceptional fluorescence, with their colourful centres and intricate patterns glowing brilliantly. Whether placed as a feature coral or incorporated into a mixed reef, their bold appearance adds texture, depth, and visual interest to the aquarium.

Favia corals are well suited to both beginner and experienced reef keepers thanks to their resilience and adaptability. With stable water parameters and occasional feeding, they grow steadily into beautiful encrusting or dome-shaped colonies that become even more impressive over time.

Key Features

  • Stunning fluorescent colours and intricate patterns
  • Hardy and suitable for most established reef aquariums
  • Excellent centrepiece or accent coral
  • Strong fluorescence under blue LED lighting
  • Moderate growth rate
  • Develops attractive encrusting and dome-shaped colonies
  • Ideal for mixed reef systems

Care Guide

Difficulty

Easy to Moderate

Lighting

Moderate lighting is ideal (approximately 75–150 PAR). Favia corals can adapt to higher light levels if acclimated gradually.

Water Flow

Low to moderate, indirect flow is recommended. Gentle water movement helps keep the coral clean while allowing the fleshy polyps to remain fully extended.

Placement

Best placed on the sand bed or lower to middle areas of the aquarium with adequate space around the colony.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–26°C
  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
  • Nitrate: 2–15 ppm
  • Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm

Feeding

Although primarily photosynthetic, Favia corals benefit greatly from occasional target feeding. Foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, Reef Roids, coral pellets, and other LPS foods can encourage faster growth, improved coloration, and healthier tissue.

Compatibility

Semi-aggressive. Favia corals produce sweeper tentacles, particularly at night, which can sting nearby corals. Leave at least 10–15 cm of space between the Favia and neighbouring corals.

Growth Rate

Moderate. Under stable water chemistry and regular feeding, Favia corals gradually develop into large, colourful colonies over the years.

Special Considerations

Favia corals thrive in stable reef aquariums with consistent alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium levels. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry, as this can cause tissue recession or reduced polyp extension. While they appreciate moderate nutrient levels, maintaining good water quality will help preserve their vibrant colours and healthy growth.

Their unique patterns, brilliant fluorescence, and relatively straightforward care make Favia corals an excellent choice for reef keepers looking to add long-lasting colour and texture to their aquarium.
