Product Description

Flowerhorn Cichlid (Hybrid Cichlid)

The Flowerhorn is a striking, man-made hybrid cichlid developed for its vibrant colours, pearling patterns, and distinctive nuchal hump (kok). Known for their bold personality and intelligence, Flowerhorns are highly interactive fish that often recognise their owner and display strong territorial behaviour.

They are hardy when kept correctly, making them popular among experienced freshwater hobbyists looking for a showpiece fish.

Tank Requirements

Minimum Tank Size

  • Adult Flowerhorn: 250–300 litres (75–90 gallons)

  • Larger tanks are strongly recommended to manage aggression and maintain water quality

Tank Setup

  • Bare bottom or minimal substrate (sand or smooth gravel)

  • Use large rocks or décor only if securely placed

  • Avoid sharp ornaments – Flowerhorns are powerful and can injure themselves

  • Plants are usually uprooted; if used, choose hardy or artificial plants

Filtration

  • Heavy-duty filtration is essential

  • Canister filters or sump systems recommended

  • Aim for 8–10x tank turnover per hour

  • Strong biological filtration to handle high waste output

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 26–30°C

  • pH: 7.0–8.0

  • Hardness: Medium to hard

  • Stable parameters are more important than chasing exact numbers

Water Changes

  • 30–50% weekly water changes recommended

  • More frequent changes may be needed for optimal colour and growth

Lighting

  • Moderate lighting

  • Excessively bright light can increase stress and aggression

Behaviour & Compatibility

  • Highly territorial and aggressive

  • Best kept alone

  • Tank mates are not recommended unless in very large, well-planned systems

  • May attack glass, equipment, or décor

Diet

  • High-quality Flowerhorn pellets as staple food

  • Supplement with:

    • Frozen or live foods (krill, prawns, bloodworms)

    • Occasional vegetables

  • Avoid feeder fish due to disease risk

Skill Level

  • Intermediate to Advanced

  • Requires consistent maintenance and proper filtration
