Coral photographs may differ slightly from the actual coral you receive. Many of our coral images are taken under blue-spectrum aquarium lighting and may be enhanced with a blue light filter to better showcase fluorescence and coloration. As a result, colours and appearance can vary depending on your aquarium lighting, water conditions, and viewing angle.

We strive to represent each coral as accurately as possible, but natural variations in colour, pattern, size, and growth form should be expected.

Description

The Frogspawn Coral is one of the most iconic and sought-after Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Instantly recognisable by its long flowing tentacles with distinctive multi-tipped ends that resemble clusters of frog eggs, this coral adds incredible movement, texture, and colour to any reef aquarium.

Available in a variety of stunning colours including fluorescent green, gold, pink, purple, and bi-colour varieties, Frogspawn Corals become even more vibrant under blue-spectrum LED lighting, where their fluorescent pigments truly come alive. Their graceful swaying motion creates a natural reef appearance and makes them an ideal centrepiece for mixed reef aquariums.

Frogspawn Corals are highly prized for their hardiness, impressive growth, and compatibility with many other Euphyllia species. Given proper care, they develop into large branching colonies that become increasingly spectacular over time, making them a favourite among both beginner and experienced reef keepers.

Care Guide

Difficulty

Easy to Moderate

Lighting

Moderate lighting is ideal (approximately 80–180 PAR). Frogspawn Corals can adapt to higher light levels if acclimated gradually, but excessive lighting may cause tissue recession or bleaching.

Water Flow

Moderate, indirect flow is preferred. The tentacles should sway gently in the current without being blasted by direct flow. Too much flow can damage the fleshy tissue, while too little flow may allow detritus to settle.

Placement

Best placed in the middle to lower regions of the aquarium with adequate room for expansion. Ensure there is sufficient space around the colony to accommodate future growth and sweeper tentacle extension.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–26°C
  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
  • Nitrate: 2–15 ppm
  • Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm

Feeding

Although Frogspawn Corals obtain most of their nutrition through photosynthesis, they benefit from occasional target feeding. Foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped marine foods, Reef Roids, coral pellets, and amino acid supplements can encourage faster growth, fuller polyp extension, and enhanced coloration.

Compatibility

Semi-aggressive. Frogspawn Corals produce sweeper tentacles that can sting nearby corals, particularly at night. Allow 10–15 cm of space between the Frogspawn and neighbouring corals. They generally coexist well with other healthy Euphyllia species when given adequate room.

Growth Rate

Moderate to fast. Under stable water conditions and regular feeding, branching Frogspawn Corals can produce new heads regularly and develop into large, impressive colonies.

Special Considerations

Frogspawn Corals thrive in stable reef aquariums with consistent alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium levels. Avoid sudden swings in water chemistry, as these can lead to poor polyp extension or tissue recession. During handling, always support the coral by its skeleton rather than the fleshy tissue to prevent damage.

With its flowing movement, brilliant fluorescent colours, and relatively forgiving care requirements, the Frogspawn Coral is an outstanding choice for hobbyists looking to add elegance, colour, and natural motion to their reef aquarium.
