Product Description

Rhodactis Mushroom Coral – Description

  • Scientific Name: Rhodactis spp. (commonly called hairy mushroom coral or bullseye mushroom)

  • Type: Soft coral / Corallimorph (not a true coral, but closely related)

  • Appearance:

    • Dome- or disc-shaped body (oral disc) covered with short, fuzzy tentacles giving a “hairy” look

    • Colors range from green, purple, blue, red, orange, or combinations with metallic sheens

    • Central mouth often visible and can inflate or deflate based on conditions

  • Habitat: Found in shallow, protected reef areas in Indo-Pacific regions

  • Behavior:

    • Generally peaceful but can expand and sting nearby corals if crowded

    • Hardy, adaptable, and good for beginner reef keepers

🌊 Rhodactis Mushroom – Care Guidelines

  • Lighting:

    • Low to moderate lighting preferred

    • Too much light can cause bleaching or shrinking

    • Ideal for shaded or lower areas of the reef tank

  • Water Flow:

    • Low to moderate flow; too strong can cause the mushroom to detach or close up

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)

    • Salinity: 1.023–1.025 SG

    • pH: 8.1–8.4

    • Nitrates: <10 ppm

    • Phosphates: <0.03 ppm

  • Placement:

    • On rock or substrate in lower to mid-tank areas

    • Leave space between mushrooms and other corals to prevent overgrowth or stings

  • Feeding:

    • Mostly photosynthetic via zooxanthellae algae

    • Benefit from occasional feeding with small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral-specific foods

  • Growth & Propagation:

    • Multiply by budding or fission (splitting)

    • Can be fragged easily — cut carefully through the mouth using a clean blade

    • Attach new fragments to rubble with mesh or low flow until they attach naturally
