Green Spotted Puffer (Tetraodon nigroviridis)
Description:
-
Appearance:
- Size: Typically reaches 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) in length.
- Color: Green body with black spots, which become more pronounced with age. The coloration may vary slightly between individuals.
- Body Shape: Compact, round body with a prominent, beak-like mouth. Can inflate its body significantly when threatened.
-
Behavior:
- Activity Level: Generally active, especially during feeding. They are known for their playful and curious nature.
- Social Behavior: Can be territorial and aggressive, particularly towards other fish. Prefers to be kept alone or with very compatible tank mates.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size:
- Minimum: 50 gallons (189 liters) is recommended. Larger tanks are preferable to accommodate their full size and allow for swimming space.
-
Tank Setup:
- Substrate: Soft sand or smooth gravel is best. Avoid sharp substrates to prevent injury to the puffer’s sensitive underside.
- Decorations: Provide hiding spots using rocks, driftwood, and PVC pipes. They need places to retreat to feel secure.
- Plants: Can include live or artificial plants. Secure them well, as puffers may uproot or damage them.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75-80°F (24-27°C). Maintain a stable temperature within this range.
- pH: 7.0-8.0. They prefer slightly alkaline water.
- Hardness: Moderate to hard water is ideal.
- Filtration: Strong filtration is necessary to maintain water quality. Ensure effective mechanical and biological filtration.
-
Diet:
- Primary Food: Carnivorous. Offer a varied diet of high-quality frozen or live foods such as shrimp, snails, and small fish. They require a diet high in protein.
- Supplemental Food: Occasional treats of earthworms or other protein-rich options.
-
Behavioral Considerations:
- Compatibility: Generally best kept alone or with very large, robust fish. Avoid keeping with small fish or species that might nip.
- Tank Mates: Some compatible tank mates include larger, non-aggressive species like certain catfish. Be cautious with tank mates, as puffers can be unpredictable.
-
Tank Maintenance:
- Water Changes: Perform regular water changes of 25-30% weekly to ensure water quality and remove waste.
- Cleaning: Keep the tank clean and monitor the filter to ensure it’s functioning properly. Remove any uneaten food promptly.
-
Health Care:
- Observation: Regularly check for signs of illness or distress, such as changes in appetite, behavior, or visible abnormalities.
- Treatment: Maintain excellent water quality to prevent diseases. Consult an aquatic veterinarian if health issues arise.
-
Additional Notes:
- Lifespan: Typically 5-10 years with proper care.
- Behavioral Trait: Puffers have teeth that grow continuously and may need to gnaw on hard objects (like certain types of shells or toys) to keep their beak-like mouth from becoming overgrown.
