Hens and Chicks Succulent
Hens and Chicks Succulent
Product Description
Product Description
The selected plant is a Sempervivum succulent (commonly known as Hens and Chicks or Houseleek), which is widely considered safe and non-toxic for reptiles.
It is a popular, hardy choice for arid or desert-style vivariums because it lacks harmful toxins, spines, or irritating saps.
š¦ Reptile Enclosure Suitability
Toxicity: Non-toxic. If your reptile (like a bearded dragon or tortoise) takes a bite, it will not poison them.
Environment: Ideal for arid or temperate species (e.g., Leopard Geckos, Bearded Dragons).
Durability: While hardy, their rosettes can be crushed easily by large, heavy reptiles. It is best suited for smaller or lighter inhabitants.
ā ļø Important Safety Precautions
Before placing this plant into your pet's enclosure, make sure to follow these safety steps:
Remove Fertilisers and Pesticides: Commercial succulents are often grown with systemic pesticides and chemical fertilisers that are highly toxic to reptiles. Wash the plant thoroughly, gently wash all soil off the roots, and repot it in an organic, fertilizer-free substrate (or a reptile-safe soil mix) for a few weeks before introducing it.
Check for Hitchhikers: Inspect the compact leaves for pests like mealybugs or mites to avoid bringing them into your vivarium.
Lighting Needs: Sempervivum species require a lot of bright, direct light to maintain their compact shape. Without a strong terrarium grow light, the plant will stretch out (etiolate), weaken, and eventually die.
