Product Description

Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) – Freshwater Aquarium Plant

Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) is one of the most popular and versatile aquarium mosses, known for its vibrant green colour, delicate branching structure, and ability to create a lush, natural appearance in freshwater aquariums.

This hardy, low-maintenance moss is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquascapers. Its ability to thrive in a wide range of water conditions and lighting environments makes it particularly suitable for low-tech planted aquariums, shrimp tanks, and breeding setups.

Java Moss can be attached to driftwood, rocks, aquarium decorations, or mesh to create beautiful moss walls, carpets, and natural-looking aquascapes. As it grows, it gradually spreads across surfaces, forming dense green clusters that provide excellent hiding places for small fish, shrimp, and newly hatched fry.

Unlike many aquarium plants, Java Moss does not require a nutrient-rich substrate or additional CO₂ injection. Although it grows well under low lighting, moderate lighting and adequate nutrients can encourage denser, healthier growth.

Planting & Care Instructions:

Java Moss is extremely easy to introduce into an aquarium and can be grown in several different ways.

For the best results, gently spread a thin layer of moss over driftwood, rocks, or aquarium decorations. Secure it using aquarium-safe glue, cotton thread, or fishing line until it naturally attaches to the surface.

Java Moss can also be left floating freely in the aquarium or attached to stainless steel mesh to create moss carpets and walls.

Provide low to moderate lighting, gentle water circulation, and stable water conditions to encourage healthy growth.

Regular trimming helps maintain a neat, compact appearance and prevents the moss from becoming excessively thick. Remove trapped debris when necessary to maintain good water circulation and reduce algae buildup.

Benefits of Java Moss:

  • Beginner Friendly: Hardy and easy to maintain.

  • No CO₂ Required: Ideal for low-tech aquariums.

  • Shrimp Safe: Provides excellent grazing surfaces and hiding places for shrimp.
