Common Name: Pogostemon Octopus, Pogostemon Stellatus ‘Octopus’
Scientific Name: Pogostemon stellatus var. ‘Octopus’
Origin: Southeast Asia (cultivar)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Growth Rate: Fast
Placement: Background
Light Requirements: Medium to high
CO₂ Requirements: Optional, but improves density
Tank Size: 10 gallons and up
Water Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (3–12 dGH)
Grows well under moderate to high lighting.
Higher light promotes bushier growth and can enhance slight reddish or golden tones at the tips.
Under low light, it may become leggy and sparse.
CO₂ is not required, but enhances growth and appearance.
Responds well to liquid fertilizers, especially nitrogen and micronutrients.
Grows well in nutrient-rich substrates but can also do fine in inert substrate with regular dosing.
Trimming: Regular trimming keeps it from overtaking the tank and encourages side shoots.
Propagation: Cut a healthy stem and replant it directly into the substrate.
Can grow very tall — pruning helps maintain shape and density.
Long, narrow, wavy leaves that resemble octopus arms, hence the name.
Adds fluid motion and texture to your aquascape — great for softening hardscape lines.
Can reach 12–20 inches tall, making it ideal for background planting.
