Puffer-Fahaka

Fahaka Puffer (Tetraodon lineatus)

The Fahaka Puffer is a bold, intelligent freshwater pufferfish known for its striking striped pattern and powerful personality. Native to African river systems, this species is famous for its dog-like behavior—recognizing its owner and actively interacting during feeding time.

Quick Overview

• Scientific Name: Tetraodon lineatus
• Common Names: Fahaka Puffer, Nile Puffer, Lineatus Puffer
• Size: Up to 40–45 cm
• Lifespan: 10+ years
• Temperament: Highly aggressive (species-only)
• Care Level: Intermediate to advanced

Appearance

Fahaka Puffers feature a thick, elongated body with bold horizontal stripes running across a yellow, gold, or brown base. Their eyes move independently, and they have a strong beak-like mouth used for crushing hard foods.

Tank Requirements

• Tank Size: 400–600L minimum (adult)
• Temperature: 24–28°C
• pH: 7.0–8.0
• Hardness: Moderate
• Setup:
  • Sand substrate (to prevent injury)
  • Strong filtration (messy eater)
  • Rocks/driftwood for structure
  • Open swimming space

Stable, pristine water quality is essential due to their sensitivity to poor conditions.

Diet

Strict carnivore with continuously growing teeth:

• Snails (essential for tooth wear)
• Mussels, clams, cockles
• Prawns, earthworms
• Occasional frozen foods

⚠️ Important: Hard-shelled foods are critical to prevent overgrown teeth, which can lead to feeding issues.

Tank Mates

🚫 Best kept alone

Fahaka Puffers are extremely territorial and aggressive. They will attack or kill tank mates, even in very large aquariums.

Behavior

Highly intelligent and interactive:

• Recognizes owners
• Can be trained to hand-feed
• Curious and active

However, they are also unpredictable and can be aggressive without warning.

Special Considerations

• Not reef-safe or community-friendly
• Can inflate when stressed (avoid triggering this)
• Requires commitment due to size and lifespan
• Powerful bite—use caution during maintenance
