Overview

The Purple Milka Coral (Stylophora spp.) is one of the most popular SPS corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Renowned for its vibrant purple branches and bright green polyps (depending on the variety), it develops into a dense, bush-like colony with thick branching growth. Compared to many SPS corals, Purple Milka is relatively hardy, making it an excellent choice for reef keepers looking to venture into SPS corals.

Care Level

🟡 Moderate

Scientific Name

Stylophora spp.

Common Name

Purple Milka Coral

Temperament

🟢 Peaceful

Lighting

Moderate to High (200–350 PAR)

  • Thrives under strong reef lighting.
  • Best colouration develops under stable, high-quality LED or T5 lighting.
  • Acclimate slowly to prevent bleaching.
  • Too little light may cause browning and slower growth.

Water Flow

Moderate to Strong

  • Requires strong, random, turbulent flow.
  • Avoid constant direct flow on one side of the colony.
  • Good flow keeps the coral clean and encourages excellent polyp extension.

Placement

  • Middle to upper areas of the aquarium.
  • Mount securely on rockwork with space to grow into a rounded colony.
  • Allow adequate room from neighbouring corals.

Water Parameters

Parameter Recommended
Temperature 24–26°C
Salinity 1.025–1.026 SG
pH 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity 8–9 dKH (stable)
Calcium 420–450 ppm
Magnesium 1300–1400 ppm
Nitrate 2–10 ppm
Phosphate 0.03–0.08 ppm

Feeding

Purple Milka obtains most of its nutrition from photosynthesis but benefits from occasional supplemental feeding.

Recommended foods:

  • Reef Roids
  • Benepets
  • Coral Frenzy
  • Fine zooplankton
  • Amino acid supplements

Feed 1–2 times per week for enhanced growth and colour.

Aggression

🟢 Peaceful

  • Does not produce long sweeper tentacles.
  • May sting corals that grow into direct contact.
  • Leave 5–8 cm between neighbouring colonies.

Growth Rate

🟢 Fast

With stable water chemistry and sufficient light, Purple Milka grows quickly into a dense, rounded branching colony and is an excellent indicator of overall SPS health.

Reef Compatibility

✅ Reef Safe

Compatible with:

  • Reef-safe fish
  • Cleaner shrimp
  • Snails
  • Hermit crabs
  • Other SPS and LPS corals when given sufficient space

Avoid coral-nipping fish such as large angelfish, butterflyfish, and some filefish.

Signs of a Healthy Purple Milka

✔ Excellent daytime polyp extension

✔ Deep purple branches with vibrant polyps

✔ Bright white or coloured growth tips

✔ Thick tissue covering the skeleton

✔ Consistent branching and encrusting growth

Common Problems

  • Bleaching: Usually caused by excessive light, rapid parameter changes, or overheating.
  • Browning: Often due to elevated nutrients or insufficient lighting.
  • RTN (Rapid Tissue Necrosis): Can occur after sudden alkalinity, salinity, or temperature swings.
  • STN (Slow Tissue Necrosis): Usually linked to long-term instability or poor water quality.
  • Poor polyp extension: May indicate pests, inadequate flow, or unstable parameters.

Coastal Pets Tip 💡

Purple Milka is one of the hardiest SPS corals available and is often recommended as a first SPS species. The secret to success is stability—keep alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, salinity, and temperature consistent. Once established, it rewards reef keepers with rapid growth, incredible polyp extension, and striking purple colouration that becomes a true centrepiece in any reef aquarium.
