When ordering livestock please select the box size and add it to your cart for accurate overnight (1-2 days) shipping costs. A small box can take 1-2 bags and a medium box 6 bags. One bag fits max 10 small (1-3cm) fish or max 2 medium (3-5cm) fish or max 1 large (>5cm) fish.

Threadfin Rainbowfish (Iriatherina werneri)

Description:

  • Appearance:

    • Size: Typically reaches about 2.5-3 inches (6-8 cm) in length.
    • Color: Males are brightly colored with iridescent scales, displaying shades of blue, green, and yellow, and have long, thread-like fins. Females are less colorful.
    • Body Shape: Slender and elongated with distinctive long, flowing fins, especially in males.
  • Behavior:

    • Activity Level: Active swimmers, often seen darting through the middle to upper levels of the tank.
    • Social Behavior: Peaceful and prefers to be in groups. Males can display territorial behavior, particularly during breeding.

Care Requirements:

  • Tank Size:

    • Minimum: 20 gallons (76 liters) for a small group. Larger tanks are preferable to accommodate their active swimming.
  • Tank Setup:

    • Substrate: Fine gravel or sand.
    • Decorations: Plants, driftwood, and open swimming areas. They thrive in a well-planted tank with ample swimming space.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting helps bring out their colors and supports plant health.

    • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C).
    • pH: 6.5-7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.
    • Filtration: Good filtration with gentle water flow. Ensure adequate oxygenation.
  • Diet:

    • Primary Food: Omnivorous. Feed high-quality flake foods, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops.
    • Supplemental Food: Offer occasional vegetable matter or algae-based foods.
  • Behavioral Considerations:

    • Compatibility: Peaceful and suitable for community tanks. Avoid aggressive or larger fish.
    • Tank Mates: Compatible with other small, peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, and other small community fish.
