Endler Guppy (Poecilia wingei)
Description:
-
Appearance:
- Body: Small, elongated fish with a streamlined shape. Males are more colorful, with vibrant patterns and bright colors, while females are more subdued.
- Color: Males display a range of vibrant colors, including iridescent blues, greens, reds, and oranges, often with striking patterns. Females are generally more subdued with a silver or grayish color.
- Size: Males typically reach about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in length, while females can grow up to 2 inches (5 cm).
-
Behavior:
- Activity: Active and lively, with a tendency to swim in schools or groups. They are known for their energetic and playful nature.
- Social Structure: Peaceful and social fish that do well in groups. They are non-aggressive and can be kept with other small, peaceful species.
Care Requirements:
-
Tank Size:
- Minimum of 10 gallons (38 liters) for a small group. Larger tanks are preferable to allow for more swimming space and to accommodate their social nature.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C). They prefer stable, warm water conditions.
- pH: 6.5-8.0. They are adaptable to a range of pH levels but do best in slightly alkaline to neutral water.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water. They can tolerate a range of water hardness levels.
- Filtration: Standard filtration is sufficient. Ensure that the tank has gentle water movement to accommodate their small size.
-
Tank Setup:
- Substrate: Soft sand or fine gravel. They do not have specific substrate requirements but should have a smooth, non-abrasive surface.
- Aquascaping: Provide plenty of plants and hiding spots. Live or artificial plants can create a comfortable environment and offer places for the fish to explore and hide.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable. They do not have specific lighting needs but should have a regular light/dark cycle to mimic their natural environment.
-
Diet:
- Primary Food: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet including high-quality flake foods, small pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and micro-worms.
- Supplemental Food: Offer occasional treats like finely chopped vegetables or algae wafers to provide dietary variety.
-
Behavioral Considerations:
- Compatibility: Best kept with other small, peaceful fish. They are compatible with other community tank species but avoid larger or aggressive fish that might harass them.
- Social Behavior: Endler Guppies are social and do best in groups. A small school of 6 or more is ideal to allow them to exhibit natural schooling behavior.
-
Tank Maintenance:
- Water Changes: Perform regular water changes (20-30% weekly) to maintain water quality and manage the bioload.
- Cleaning: Clean the tank regularly and remove any uneaten food or waste. Ensure the filtration system is effective and not causing excessive water movement.
-
Health Care:
- Observation: Monitor for signs of stress or illness, such as changes in behavior, loss of appetite, or visible symptoms like fin deterioration or discoloration.
- Treatment: Maintain optimal water conditions and consult an aquarium professional if health issues arise. Promptly address any signs of disease or stress to ensure the well-being of your Endler Guppies.
