Despite the name, the Scooter Blenny is not a true blenny—it belongs to the dragonet family, closely related to mandarins. These fish are named for their adorable scooting behavior across the sandbed and rocks. They have elongated bodies, fan-like pectoral fins, and large eyes. Males are typically more colorful and possess a tall dorsal fin used for display.

Coloration includes mottled brown, red, and cream patterns, often with ocellated spots (eye-like circles), giving them camouflage on sandy bottoms.
