Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis) Description and Care Requirements
Description:
- Appearance: Distinctive, elongated body with a light brown or tan coloration; features feathery, fan-like claws used for filtering food from the water.
- Size: Grows to about 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm).
- Behavior: Generally peaceful and can often be seen perched on decorations or substrate, using their claws to filter feed.
Care Requirements:
- Tank Size: Minimum of 20 gallons; larger tanks are better for stability and space.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 74-82°F (23-28°C)
- pH: 6.5-8.0
- Hardness: 5-15 dGH
- Filtration: Strong filtration is essential; they thrive in well-aerated water with good flow.
- Substrate: Fine gravel or sand; provide hiding spots and surfaces for grazing.
- Hiding Places: Use plants, rocks, and driftwood to create shaded areas for the shrimp.
- Diet: Omnivorous; primarily filter feeders. Supplement their diet with high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and finely crushed foods.
- Tank Mates: Compatible with peaceful fish and invertebrates; avoid aggressive species that may harm them.
- Behavioral Note: They are often more active during the day and may display interesting behavior while feeding.
Additional Considerations:
- Maintenance: Regular water changes (10-20% weekly) to maintain water quality.
- Monitoring: Observe for signs of stress or molting issues; provide hiding spots during molting.
- Breeding: Breeding is rare in captivity; larvae require brackish water conditions to survive, which complicates breeding efforts.
