Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) – Elephant Bush, 100% Reptile-Safe & Edible
Spekboom, also known as Elephant Bush or Dwarf Jade, is a proudly South African succulent with small, round, emerald-green leaves on reddish-brown woody stems. It is completely non-toxic for reptiles and one of the most popular live plants for enclosures and outdoor tortoise pens.
A natural food source: Tortoises and bearded dragons can safely graze on the leaves, which are juicy, hydrating, and rich in vitamin C. Some tortoises love them, others may need a little convincing due to their slightly tangy scent.
Ideal for arid enclosures: A sturdy succulent that thrives in warm, dry conditions and bright light, spekboom handles heat lamps with ease and provides excellent climbing structure and cover for desert-dwelling reptiles like leopard geckos.
Care guide:
- Light: Full sun or semi-shade.
- Water: Only water once the soil has dried out completely to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Well-drained soil is essential.
Please note: As with most commercially grown plants, we recommend washing the plant thoroughly and re-potting into pesticide-free soil before placing it in your pet's enclosure.
