Overview

Talbot’s Damsels are one of the more peaceful damselfish species, making them a great option for community marine aquariums. They are hardy, colorful, and beginner-friendly compared to many other damsels.

Quick Facts

  • Common Name: Talbot’s Damsel
  • Scientific Name: Chrysiptera talboti
  • Adult Size: 5–6 cm
  • Lifespan: 5–10+ years
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive (mild compared to most damsels)
  • Care Level: Easy
  • Reef Safe: Yes
  • Minimum Tank Size: 90L for one, 180L+ for groups/community

Appearance

Talbot’s Damsels are soft pastel yellow to cream in colour with a distinctive pinkish to peach face and a dark shoulder spot near the dorsal fin.

Water Parameters

Maintain stable marine conditions:

  • Temperature: 24–26°C
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
  • Ammonia: 0 ppm
  • Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm (preferably under 10 ppm)
  • Phosphate: <0.1 ppm

Tank Setup

Talbot’s Damsels appreciate rockwork and hiding places.

Recommended setup:

  • Live rock with caves and crevices
  • Open swimming space
  • Moderate water flow
  • Stable salinity and temperature
  • Mature aquarium preferred

They will establish a territory, usually around a chosen cave or rock section.

Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous and easy to feed.

Offer a varied diet:

  • Marine pellets
  • Marine flakes
  • Frozen mysis shrimp
  • Brine shrimp
  • Finely chopped seafood
  • Marine herbivore foods
  • Spirulina-based foods

Feeding frequency:
Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions.

Temperament & Compatibility

One of the calmer damsels, but still capable of territorial behaviour.

Good tankmates:
✔ Clownfish
✔ Gobies
✔ Blennies
✔ Fairy wrasses
✔ Cardinalfish
✔ Tangs (appropriately sized tanks)
✔ Reef-safe invertebrates

Use caution with:
⚠ Very timid fish
⚠ Other damsels in smaller tanks
⚠ Dottybacks
⚠ Aggressive clownfish pairs

Avoid:
✖ Predatory fish that may eat them
✖ Very aggressive territorial species in small aquariums

Reef Compatibility

Completely reef safe.

They do not bother:

  • Corals
  • Shrimp
  • Snails
  • Hermits

Behaviour

  • Active swimmers
  • May defend a small territory
  • Often hover near rockwork
  • Can become bold and interactive over time

Group Keeping

Possible, but best done carefully:

  • Add multiple juveniles together
  • Provide plenty of rockwork
  • Larger tanks reduce aggression

Small tanks may result in bullying.

Beginner Tips

  • Acclimate slowly to salinity
  • Avoid adding them to very tiny nano tanks
  • Introduce after extremely timid fish have settled
  • Feed a varied diet for best colour

Common Issues

Usually very hardy, but can suffer from:

  • Marine ich
  • Velvet
  • Stress from poor acclimation
  • Aggression-related injuries

Quarantine recommended before introduction.
