Coral photographs may differ slightly from the actual coral you receive. Many of our coral images are taken under blue-spectrum aquarium lighting and may be enhanced with a blue light filter to better showcase fluorescence and coloration. As a result, colours and appearance can vary depending on your aquarium lighting, water conditions, and viewing angle.

We strive to represent each coral as accurately as possible, but natural variations in colour, pattern, size, and growth form should be expected.

Description

The Trachyphyllia Coral, commonly known as the Open Brain Coral, is one of the most spectacular and colourful Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals available in the reef aquarium hobby. Renowned for its large fleshy tissue, intricate maze-like patterns, and vibrant fluorescent colours, Trachyphyllia corals make an exceptional centrepiece in any reef aquarium.

Available in an incredible range of colours including brilliant greens, reds, oranges, pinks, yellows, blues, and multi-coloured "rainbow" varieties, every Trachyphyllia is unique. Under blue-spectrum reef lighting, their fluorescent pigments become even more vibrant, creating a stunning display that instantly draws attention.

Unlike many LPS corals, Trachyphyllia typically rests directly on the sand bed, where it inflates dramatically throughout the day. Healthy specimens can expand to nearly double their skeletal size, giving them a soft, cushion-like appearance that gently moves with the water flow.

Their peaceful temperament, striking colours, and relatively straightforward care requirements have made Trachyphyllia one of the most sought-after showpiece corals for both mixed reefs and dedicated LPS aquariums.

Care Guide

Difficulty

Easy to Moderate

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting is ideal (approximately 50–120 PAR). Trachyphyllia generally prefer lower light than many other LPS corals and should be acclimated slowly if exposed to stronger lighting.

Water Flow

Low to moderate, indirect flow is recommended. Gentle water movement allows the coral to remain fully inflated while preventing debris from settling on its tissue. Avoid strong, direct flow, which can cause the tissue to retract or become damaged.

Placement

Best placed directly on a sandy substrate where the fleshy tissue can expand naturally without contacting sharp rocks. Avoid placing the coral on rockwork, as the soft tissue can become damaged against hard surfaces.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–26°C
  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
  • Nitrate: 2–15 ppm
  • Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm

Feeding

Although Trachyphyllia receive much of their nutrition through photosynthesis, they benefit greatly from regular target feeding. Offer foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, krill, Reef Roids, or specialised LPS coral foods once or twice per week. Feeding after lights dim often produces the strongest feeding response.

Compatibility

Generally peaceful but should be given adequate space from neighbouring corals. While not highly aggressive, Trachyphyllia can extend short feeding or sweeper tentacles and may sting nearby corals if placed too closely. Leave 10–15 cm of clearance around the colony.

Growth Rate

Slow to moderate. Rather than rapidly producing new heads, Trachyphyllia grow by gradually increasing the size of their fleshy tissue and skeleton. With proper care, they can become impressive, long-lived display corals.

Special Considerations

Trachyphyllia thrive in stable reef aquariums with consistent water chemistry and moderate nutrient levels. Avoid exposing the fleshy tissue to sharp rockwork or aggressive tank mates that may nip at the coral. When handling, always lift the coral by its skeleton rather than the soft tissue to prevent injury.

With their breathtaking colours, inflated appearance, and gentle movement, Trachyphyllia corals are among the most iconic LPS corals available. Their striking beauty and relatively easy care make them an excellent choice for hobbyists looking to create a truly eye-catching reef aquarium.
